Lagos State University (LASU) has once again emerged as the most sought-after institution in Nigeria for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) admission cycle, according to the latest application data.

The figures were released at the policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja on Monday.

The statistics show that thousands of candidates are competing for limited admission slots across the country’s leading universities, with Lagos State University (LASU) maintaining its dominance as the preferred choice among applicants.

With a total of 84,426 applicants, LASU leads the chart, followed closely by the University of Lagos, which recorded 78,240 applicants.

Other top-ranking institutions include Obafemi Awolowo University with 60,370 applicants and the University of Ibadan with 58,895 applicants, further highlighting the continued preference for established universities with strong academic reputations.

Also on the list are the University of Benin (55,425 applicants), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (54,085 applicants), and the University of Ilorin (52,514 applicants), all of which continue to attract significant interest from prospective students nationwide.

Rounding out the top 10 are the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with 51,660 applicants, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (48,272 applicants), and the University of Port Harcourt with 48,199 applicants.

The data highlights the intense competition for university admission in Nigeria, with candidates largely favouring federal and state universities known for affordability, academic excellence, and strong institutional reputation.

Education analysts say the trend also reflects increasing pressure on the country’s tertiary education system, as demand for quality university education continues to outpace available admission spaces.
