The United Nations Children’s Fund has distributed educational materials to over 1,500 children displaced by the recent Yelwata attack in Benue State.
The children, now living in a temporary camp at the International Market in Makurdi, were provided with exercise books, school bags, and sportswear to support their continued education.
Speaking during the distribution on Thursday, UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Mrs Juliet Chihiwe, said the organisation remains committed to helping the children even after they return to their communities.
She said, “We have over 1500 IDPs children and we are here to support them with educational materials such as exercise books, sportswear and school bags.”
“There is a need for more educational materials supply, more teachers, and to also ensure that even when they return, we will continue to support these children until they migrate to a tertiary institution,” Chihiwe said.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management, Helen Nambativ, appreciated UNICEF for its support to the displaced children.
“UNICEF has the highest intervention in Benue State, and they are always intervening in critical areas like education because education is very important to human lives,” she said.
Also speaking, UNICEF Education Specialist from the Enugu field office, Mrs Agatha Nzeribe, said the organisation has been actively supporting victims of the Yelwata crisis, especially children.
