As part of efforts to equip students with necessary hands-on skills, the Rotary Club of Ikeja, District 9111, has donated a vocational training centre to Ikeja Junior High School.
The N40 million project, unveiled by the Chairman, Lafarge Cement WAPCO plc, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, and District Governor, Rotary International District 9111, Dr Oluwole Kukoyi, was handed to the Lagos State Ministry of Basic Education.
Speaking at the event, President, Rotary Club of Ikeja, Oluwakayode Situ, said the club places a premium on the empowerment of students, particularly indigent ones.
Situ commended the state government for integrating vocational training in the school curriculum, while also appreciating the education ministry for allowing the club to embark on the project.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli Balogun, said the project marked another milestone, particularly in advancing the noble goals of the club.
Balogun noted that the club’s outstanding efforts to serve the community, especially through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, are truly appreciated.
“This initiative will primarily equip students with practical skills, knowledge and competencies required for employment in other specific industry or fields, and will no doubt, have ripple effects on our community, as it inspires learning hands-on, training, apprenticeship and internship, that prepares students for enduring careers in areas such as technical fields and skilled trades,” Balogun said.
Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Education District Six, Mrs. Mojisola Yusuf, said the project will promote self-reliance and the spirit of entrepreneurship in the students.
The Principal, Ayo Quadri, appreciated the club and assured that the centre would be put to good use.
