Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippine president, has said that sending children back to school without the availability of coronavirus vaccine will be disastrous; hence he would not allow it. He made this known on Monday during a televised address.
"I will not allow the opening of classes where students will be near each other," Aljezeera quotes Rodrigo. "Unless I am sure that they are really safe, it's useless to be talking about opening of classes."
25 million primary and secondary students of the Philippine are set to return to school in August, after authorities had moved it from June due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the president says the risk will be overwhelming.
The education ministry had announced it would resort to e-learning system as against face-to-face studies in the coming academic year to mitigate the spread of the virus. However, many households do not have computers, which is key to the success of online lessons.
As of Wednesday, May 27, Philippine has recorded 15,049 confirmed cases, 904 deaths and 3,506 recoveries.
