The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is sponsoring an essay competition to commemorate the 2026 World Maritime Day with the theme 'From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence". 

The essay competition is conceived for Year 1 and 2 students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria including Maritime Academies and Universities. It is designed to create critical awareness, stimulate youth engagement, and generate actionable solutions for bridging the gap between national/international maritime policies and practical execution in Nigeria's economy.

The World Maritime Day is celebrated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and by the member states globally to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, marine environment, seafarers and other specific aspects of IMO's work.

NIMASA World Maritime Day Essay Competition Benefits

1st Prize: N1,000,000 Education Grant, Laptop and an Award Plaque

2nd Prize: N750,000 Education Grant, Laptop and an Award Plaque

3rd Prize: N500,000 Education Grant, Laptop and an Award Plaque

7 Consolation Awards: N300,000 Education Grant Each and a Certificate

Requirements for NIMASA World Maritime Day Essay Competition

The essay competition is open to only year 1 and year 2 students of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Participants are required to scan bona fide proof of studentship alongside their essays.

Proof should include letters of admission and identity cards of the institution.

Essays should be a maximum of 1200 words (+ or - 10%) double spaced in MS word and font size 12

Plagiarism will not be accepted.

Essays should end with the name, telephone number and email address of the participant.

Essays that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.

Only successful participants will be contacted.
