In a bold move to bridge the skills gap in Nigeria’s booming telecommunications sector, over 50 youths in Abuja have begun a two-week intensive training programme focused on telecom operations, equipment installation, maintenance, and deployment.
The pilot phase of the Empowerment and Skill Acquisition Project is a joint initiative between the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and a private organisation, Grassroots Bridge Builders.
The programme is designed to equip young Nigerians with practical, market-relevant skills that enhance self-reliance and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking at the official launch in Abuja, the Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Mathew Adepoju, emphasised the need for skilled manpower in Nigeria’s telecom space. He noted that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the strategic vision of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology.
“This programme is focused on microwave communication and telecom installation, maintenance, and deployment,” Dr. Adepoju stated.
“We are convinced this is the biggest telecom market in Africa, and with proper training, our youth can tap into this opportunity. The market is ready, and government policy is on their side.”
On his part, Mr. Ibrahim Igoche, Chief Executive Officer of Grassroots Bridge Builders, said the training aims to reduce persistent network downtimes while creating a new wave of telecom-savvy professionals.
“We’re not just training for training’s sake,” Igoche said.
