The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has commended the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for approving payment of N500,00 bursary awards to the final year indigenes of the state studying Medicine, Maritime and Aviation.
This commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Vice President, Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs of NANS, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, on Sunday.
The governor has reportedly approved the payment of N500,000 each to final students of Oyo State origin studying medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, maritime and aviation in tertiary institutions across the country.
The governor was also reported to have approved a sum N100,000 as bursary awards for final students studying other courses.
Akinbodunse, who described the action of the governor as “humane and sterling” in the statement noted that the bursary awards will go a long way in boosting the morale of the beneficiaries, added that it will also ease the financial burden on the parents of the students.
She said the approval of the governor came at the right time when the economic situation in the country is not palatable.
The NANS leader observed further that the bursary awards, which will also be extended to the final students in dentistry and veterinary medicine, will serve as an encouragement for thousands of students of the state to pursue their academic studies in medicine related courses, maritime and aviation.
Akinbodunse added that the decision by the Oyo State governor to approve the building of a cloudware platform to register all tertiary students from the state, will capture more students to benefit from the bursary awards.
While saying that the approval of the bursary awards was an icing on the cake for the Oyo State students who have benefitted immensely from various interventions in the education sector by Governor Makinde-led administration, urged the governor not to relent in his administration’s efforts to enhance delivery of quality education in the state.
NANS National Vice President, however, urged other state governors to emulate Governor Makinde by ensuring not only regular payment of the bursary to their students, but increasing the amount being paid to reflect the current economic reality in the country.
