The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has tasked the newly inducted students at the Lead City University (LCU), Ibadan, to embrace excellence, compassion and patriotism in the discharge of their duties.

The Acting Registrar of the council, Dr Donald Ofili, who made the call at the induction ceremony for qualified students of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, enjoined the inductees to be alive to their professional responsibilities.

Ofili noted that opportunities abound for those who meet the requisite ethical standards and prioritise saving lives over pecuniary or parochial interests.

“Be patriotic by putting your country first. Even if you are going to join the ‘gravy train’ abroad, you ought to first hone your skills through practice,” he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor, LCU, Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo, urged the inductees to uphold the highest standards of integrity, competence, and compassion, which the university is known for.

Adeyemo, who emphasised that the students were trained for the global market, enjoined them to be guided by ethics in the discharge of their duties, thirst for continuous learning, and commitment to service.

He said: “Lead City University is committed to excellence in education and the holistic development of its students. Your induction attests to the quality of training and mentorship you have received under the guidance of our capable faculty and through the facilities provided by the university.

“As you enter the professional world, I urge you to uphold the highest standards of integrity, competence, and compassion. The nation and the world at large are in sure need of professionals who are not only skilled but also principled and passionate,” the VC stated.

The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, Dr Ayodeji Ajibare, urged the inductees to uphold professionalism, adding that their commitment to academic excellence and compassionate pursuit of serving humanity through medical laboratory science is truly commendable.

The guest lecturer, Prof. Musa Muhibi, enjoined them to take advantage of opportunities in the field. Muhibi, who is the Chairman, West African Post-Graduate College of Medical Laboratory Science, Nigeria Chapter, enjoined them to take advantage of opportunities in the field.

The professor also urged the government to pay more attention to the funding of healthcare and employ more staff in the sector.
