The Irede Foundation (TIF) has reiterated its call for unrestricted access to education, healthcare, and mobility support for children living with limb loss in Nigeria.
The foundation made the appeal during the 12th edition of its yearly Out-On-A-Limb (OOAL) Inclusion Walk, held in April to commemorate Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month.
Themed “Full Access, No Cap!”, the walk took place across 60 global locations and aimed to raise funds for prosthetic limbs, spotlight the challenges of child amputees, and promote inclusive education.
Executive Director of TIF, Mrs Crystal Chigbu, said the foundation was inspired by her personal experience raising a daughter born without bones in her legs. “We had to amputate. Along that journey, I met many children like her. That’s when I knew I had to do something to fight stigma, advocate inclusion, and prove that children with disabilities can live full lives,” she said, urging media and community support for awareness.
General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Adenike Oyetunde, echoed the need for collaboration, saying the government cannot do it alone. She encouraged parents and caregivers to seek psycho-social support for themselves and their children to boost emotional wellbeing and growth.
This year, the foundation aims to reach 60,000 people globally, raise N40 million, and engage 10,000 participants in Nigeria.
