Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned a National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Community ICT Centre at Ladipo Alayande School of Science, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, aimed at enhancing digital literacy and learning in Oyo State.

The project, facilitated through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) under the Office of the First Lady in partnership with NITDA, was officially handed over to the Oyo State Government as part of a social investment intervention programme.

Named in honour of former Minister of Trade, Chief (Mrs) Onikepo Akande—wife of the founder of Splash FM and Lagelu FM, Oba Muritala Akande—the centre becomes the third of four such ICT centres being established across Nigeria by the RHI.

At the commissioning, Mrs Tinubu emphasized that the initiative is people-focused and not politically driven, highlighting the vital role of ICT in empowering communities, especially women and girls, to overcome socio-economic barriers and access global opportunities.

In his remark, the host, Governor Seyi Makinde lauded Federal Government for bringing the centre to Oyo state.

He assured that the state would take full advantage of the centre to boost its digital skills, adding that IT and AI is the road to a new future for Nigeria’s economy.

Also, in his remarks at the event, the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani emphasized that President Bola Tinubu led government is establishing core foundation for physical, human and digital infrastructures to develop the nation, enjoining the youths to utilise the hub to take Nigeria to greater heights.

In appreciation for naming the ICT hub after her, Chief Mrs Onikepo Akande appreciated the presidency and Governor Makinde, noting that ICT intervention has transformed Ibadan from an ancient city to a digital city.
