FiberOne Broadband Limited, Nigeria’s biggest Internet Service Provider, has launched the MindsMasterz inter school competition, a flagship CSR initiative designed to promote academic excellence and digital literacy among secondary school students.

The maiden edition, held on Thursday and Friday at Civic Hive, Adepate House, Yaba, Lagos, brought together students from eight schools: AUD Senior High School, Clegg Girls Senior High School, Onitolo Community Senior High School, Muritala Ajadi Animashaun Community Senior Grammar School, Sanya Senior Grammar School, Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School, Burrell Avenue Senior High School, and Eletu Odibo Senior High School.

The two-day quiz-style tournament tested knowledge across science, technology, mathematics, history, current affairs, and digital literacy. It combined individual skill with teamwork, creating an atmosphere of friendly competition.

The competition forms part of Project Giga, FiberOne’s CSR programme inspired by the UN Giga Initiative, which seeks to connect every school in the world to the internet by 2030. Through MindsMasterz, FiberOne is committed to bridging Nigeria’s digital education gap by equipping students with digital skills and access to broadband.

Addressing the students, Onatoye-Buraimoh Oluwakemi, Director of Co-Curricular Science and Technology for Lagos State Education District IV, praised FiberOne for creating a platform that encourages competition and learning beyond the classroom.

“FiberOne has given these students a platform to prepare, to be disciplined, and to stand out among their peers,” she said. “Data is life, and this competition brings that opportunity directly to them.”

The Chief Customer Experience Officer at FiberOne, Adeyinka Isioye, said MindsMasterz reflects the company’s dedication to unlocking access to digital learning.

“CSR for us is about creating opportunities,” Isioye said. “Despite how widespread internet access may seem, it remains expensive for many families. Through MindsMasterz, we want students to understand how the internet and education intersect, to start thinking critically, and to develop digital skills early.”

Isioye added that the competition will become an annual event and gradually expand to other states as FiberOne’s network grows.

“We’re currently active in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Rivers, and Kwara States,” he said. “Next year, we plan to expand to over 15 states where we operate.”

The Head of Regulatory and Public Relations at FiberOne, Kehinde Joda, announced that the company has also launched an education support programme providing one year of free internet access to selected schools within its coverage areas.

“This initiative aligns with federal and Lagos State efforts to promote digital learning, and it supports the UN Giga Initiative,” Joda said. “It’s our way of giving back and helping to spark students’ interest in learning while closing the digital divide.”

He described the initiative as the first of its kind for FiberOne, adding that it would be expanded next year alongside ongoing upgrades to the company’s broadband infrastructure.

“Our network is being upgraded to global standards, and as we grow, we’ll continue to contribute to our communities,” Joda said.

At the conclusion of the event, Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School emerged as the overall winner of the competition, while Sanya Senior Grammar School and Eletu Odibo Senior High School took second and third place, respectively. The winning team comprised Jaiyeole Fatiha Feyikemi, Mustapha Fridaus Kikelomo, Obanla Oluwasemilore Christanah, and Nzeribe Chioma Praise.

The Sanya Senior Grammar School team included Drammeh Saleem Bashir, Aqua Marilyn Otobong, Ogunriade Mary Oluwadamilola, and Abdulsalam Ahmed Badmus, while Eletu Odibo Senior High School was represented by Akinware Prosper Ebenezer, Oluleye Daniel Oluwaloseyi, Oyewale Surprise Rachael, and Odunna Favour Olumachi.

Organisers said the competition not only rewards academic excellence but also exposes students to the transformative potential of digital technology, underscoring FiberOne’s long-term commitment to empowering young Nigerians.
