David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has organised a capacity-building workshop for Staff of the Directorate of Students’ Career Service Center to strengthen career counselling, employability development and professional support for students and graduates.

The workshop, held at the University’ s Auditorium on October 8, 2026, was flagged off by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jesse Uneke, and featured training in career counselling, job-search strategies, information technology and professional certification for career services personnel.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Celestina Adaeze Nweze, Dean of Students’ Affairs and Director of the DUFUHS Counselling Centre, stressed the need for professional, ethical and student-centred career services, noting that employers increasingly demand demonstrable skills beyond academic qualifications.

In her presentation, Prof. F. E. Otta urged career advisers to embrace modern career counselling techniques and artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the importance of digital literacy, networking, continuous learning and personalised career guidance. She cited a reported shift towards skills-based recruitment, with 85 per cent of employers said to prioritise skills over traditional degree requirements.

Another resource person, Dr. Chukwuemeka Okpara, emphasised strategic job searches, tailored and Applicant Tracking System (ATS)-friendly CVs, professional networking and interview preparation. He urged career centres to move beyond vacancy announcements and provide structured employability training, including the responsible use of AI.

The Director of the DUFUHS Students’ Career Service Centre, Prof. Chuks Oswald Edeogu, commended TETFund for supporting tertiary education and praised Prof. Uneke for establishing the centre to strengthen career guidance and professional development at the university.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment to enhancing career services and equipping DUFUHS students and graduates with the skills and adaptability required in an evolving labour market.
