As part of measures to bridge the technology skills gap, research and innovation in the country, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has partnered with a private company, MiGO Mobile Nigeria.

The partnership has led to the unveiling of a tech hub, christened the Care and Research Development Centre, on campus.

Speaking at the launch, the vice chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, expressed excitement over the development, saying the tech hub would have far-reaching impact for students and staff of the university and the wider community.

He stated that the centre would enable students to gain first-hand technology transfer, participate in research and development of MiGO devices, as well as access internship and employment opportunities.

He particularly expressed delight that the partnership also offers students annual scholarships, with two students already awarded as the maiden set.

“That we also have four of our students recognised as the company’s ambassadors is another plus to us as an institution,” the vice- chancellor said, adding, “Before long, many more students will enjoy the scholarship.”

Reflecting on the journey that birthed the centre, the vice chancellor praised the resilience and commitment of the drivers of the project.

He stated that “what we are witnessing today speaks volumes to vision and alignment in action in Covenant University to develop highly skilled manpower across various fields for the global economy and we are deeply committed to this cause.”

On his part, the CEO/Managing Director of MiGO Mobile, Mr George Evans, underscored the importance of the collaboration, calling it a deliberate move to equip students with cutting-edge technological skills while fostering a strong research and development culture connecting academia to industry players.

He emphasised that the initiative was driven by the vision to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

“So, for us in MiGO Mobile, it’s not really about our products, but about helping the next generation to acquire the requisite technology knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world of technology, even now as students.”

He noted that no investment is more valuable than education, as the production of quality manpower would dictate the extent to which a country can attain economic greatness and global relevance.

He, however, mentioned that the company’s range of products includes laptops, smart phones, tablets, smart watches, power banks, among other wearable, adding that the company also plans to partner with MTN by making its smart phones available at some of its outlets, which is to commence soon.

The event featured the presentation of scholarships to two beneficiary students, Ayomide Ogunmola and David Ibiyemi.

While Ogunmola, a 100-level student, received an N10 million scholarship covering full tuition from 100 to 500 level, Ibiyemi, a 500-level student, was awarded N2.2 million.

Also, four students were recognised as the company’s ambassadors at the event.
