Other approved packages include restoration of the previous policy of giving automatic teaching employment to best graduating students in tertiary institutions reintroduction of bursary award to education students in the universities and colleges of education, funding of Teaching Practice by the federal government through TETFund, provision of Special Teacher Pension scheme for teachers, building low-cost housing for teachers in rural areas, expansion of the Annual Presidential Teachers and School Awards to include more categories,etc.

As Nigeria joined the world to commemorate World Teachers’ Day in Abuja today, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, approved a new salary scale and retirement age for teachers, as well as automatic employment for students who study education as a course in the university.

Mr. President approved 65 years for retirement and an extension of service years from 35 to 40 years in place of the hitherto approved 35 years for service.

President Burahi listed a number of other welfare packages in addition to the new salary scheme implementation and retirement age increment as a way of appreciating the teachers for their sacrifices in human development and nation building. The welfare packages were meant to quell the occasional agitations of teachers for better welfare.

Other approved packages include restoration of the previous policy of giving automatic teaching employment to best graduating students in tertiary institutions, reintroduction of bursary award to education students in the universities and colleges of education, funding of Teaching Practice by the federal government through TETFund, provision of Special Teacher Pension scheme for teachers, building low-cost housing for teachers in rural areas, expansion of the Annual Presidential Teachers and School Awards to include more categories, provision of loan facilities, prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements, timely promotion to eliminate stagnation of teachers, free tuition and automatic admission of biological children of teachers in their respective schools of service.

Meanwhile, during the World Teachers’ Day celebration, fifteen teachers received Presidential awards of excellence in the categories of Best School Administrator in Public School, Best Teacher in Public Schools and Best Teacher in Private Schools respectively. Ten schools also received Presidential awards of excellence in the categories of Best Public School and Best Private School respectively.
