The Federal Ministry of Education has authorized secondary schools to reopen for exit classes on August 4 nationwide to enable students prepare for West African Senior School Certificate Examination starting on August 17, 2020.

These decisions were reached today, Monday, at the virtual meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Education to discuss the urgent matter of school resumption and date for WASSCE. In attendance were the Honourable Commissioners for Education of the 36 states, the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), the proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.

“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and public spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparations for safe reopening, as agreed,” according the statement released shortly after the meeting by Ben Bem Goong, Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.

The ministry shall summon another meeting tomorrow, July 28, to harmonize the examination dates of the examination bodies. The meeting shall have in attendance the Chief Executives of examination bodies namely, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS.

Decisions reached at the meeting shall be conveyed to stakeholders in the sector.
