The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reached an agreement with the federal government to call off its strike which has lasted about nine months. This was reached in a meeting on Friday.

The federal government team, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, agreed to pay  N70 billion to ASUU, broken into two, with N40 billion as the Earned Allowance and N30bn for the revitalisation of the university system billion.

The Federal government also agreed to pay ASUU members the arrears of salaries before 31st December 2020.

Following the agreement, ASUU shall communicate the outcome of the meeting to its members and then report back to FG, after which the union will publicly call-off the strike.

Meanwhile, the federal government had earlier agreed exempt the academic union from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) pending the approval of ASUU proposed payment system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
