ASUU Threatens FG with Commencement of Indefinite Strike from Friday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to begin an indefinite strike on Friday, November 21, accusing the federal government of failing to honour previously agreed terms.

This is coming after ASUU’s one-month window given to resolve long-standing demands expired amid rising tensions.

The union’s plans to shut down all public universities across Nigeria indefinitely from Friday, was made in a brief statement posted on the ASUU’s official X account on Tuesday.

ASUU warned that the closure will be enforced unless the government addresses key issues, including fair remuneration and improved working conditions for lecturers, aimed at halting the ongoing exodus of academic talent from Nigerian universities.

“All universities will be closed nationwide till further notice on Friday,” the union stated.

After suspending a warning strike earlier this year, ASUU is now threatening to escalate its industrial action. The union says it will embark on a full-scale indefinite strike from November 21, citing the government’s selective implementation of agreements.

ASUU also rejected the federal government’s 35 percent salary increase proposal, describing it as insufficient.

Recall that ASUU had previously went on a two-week warning strike in October, which was suspended to allow for renegotiations of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other unresolved matters affecting the university system.
