The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the first batch of results for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates.

According to the council, a total of 10,480 candidates sat the examination nationwide, held between January 28 and February 14, 2026. Out of these, 3,429 candidates, representing 32.72 percent, obtained credit passes in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

WAEC noted that overall, 4,598 candidates—43.87 percent—earned credits in a minimum of five subjects, whether or not English and Maths were included.

The examination saw increased participation compared to 2025, with 10,523 candidates registering this year, up from 9,438 in the previous year—an 11.49 percent rise. The exams were conducted at 166 centres across Nigeria.

A total of 608 examiners were involved in marking the candidates’ scripts at three locations: Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna, between February 26 and March 13, 2026.

WAEC also reported that 43 candidates with special needs took part in the examination, including 11 visually impaired candidates, four with hearing impairments, and four albinos.

Of the total candidates who sat the exam, 5,106 were males (48.72 percent) and 5,374 were females (51.28 percent), highlighting a slightly higher female participation.

The council confirmed that 8,418 candidates have had their results fully processed and released. However, 2,062 candidates – 19.68 percent – still have some subjects pending due to errors attributable to them, with WAEC working to complete processing promptly.

Additionally, the results of 75 candidates are being withheld in connection with alleged examination malpractice. WAEC said these cases are under investigation, and findings will be presented to the council’s appropriate committee for determination, after which the affected candidates will be notified.
