The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Port Harcourt Zone, has urged schools to upgrade their Internet Computer Technology (ICT) centres to meet required standards in preparation for the full transition to computer-based examinations.

Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Adeniran-Amusan Akim, gave the advice on Thursday during a sensitisation programme in Port Harcourt, organised by Teadro Systems Ltd in collaboration with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), the Bank of Industry (BOI), Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Canon.

Akim disclosed that the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) would commence fully with the 2026 diet, stressing the need for schools to adapt to the new format.

He stated that WAEC had already designated centres for schools unable to meet the standards but encouraged institutions that wish to host the exams within their premises to provide the necessary equipment and infrastructure.

“The computer-based exam system is here to stay, and schools must adapt to the new format by complying with WAEC’s requirements,” Akim said.

Also speaking, WAEC’s Head of Examination, Mr. Lucky Njoagwuani, noted that the council had successfully conducted computer-based tests for private candidates over the past two years.

According to him, schools must provide at least 250 functional laptops with 10 percent backups, a robust server capable of supporting 250 systems simultaneously, LAN connectivity, CCTV cameras, adequate lighting and air conditioning, uninterrupted power supply with UPS, and a backup generator of at least 40kVA.

He added that the computer-based system would enhance accessibility, reduce paper usage, and cut logistics costs.

On his part, the Chairman of NAPPS in Rivers State, Mr. Sunday Jaja, urged school owners to leverage funding opportunities from BOI and the Federal Government MSME intervention fund to meet the requirements.

“Technology is playing a vital role in modern education. This initiative will help schools stay updated with current trends and prepare students for the digital age,” Jaja said.

The event also featured a raffle draw where winners received technological gadgets, including an HP computer set, Canon printer, Lenovo tablet, keyboard, and mouse.
