The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Rivers Command, and the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have agreed to collaborate in the fight against drug abuse.
The partnership was announced on August 26, 2025, during a courtesy visit by PCRC to the Vice Chancellor of UniPort, Prof Owunari Georgewill, in his office.
Chairman of PCRC in Rivers State, Voke Emore, commended the Vice Chancellor and his management team for sustaining the university’s reputation as one of Africa’s top-ranking institutions.
Emore said the PCRC has partnered with relevant government agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to tackle drug abuse in the state, noting that previous collaborations have extended anti-drug campaigns to several universities.
“We understand the strong link between the use of illicit drugs and criminal behaviour. It is on this basis that we have chosen to expand our anti-drug campaign to UniPort. We anticipate a productive relationship as we collaborate in the future,” he said.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor observed that UniPort’s population of over 40,000 students made such a partnership strategic in addressing the needs of young people.
“The university is a place where we encounter the good, the bad and the ugly. This kind of partnership will be very beneficial. We welcome your campaign and will support you to effectively carry out your duties. By counselling students and educating them on the dangers of drug abuse, you are not only preventing criminal activities but also safeguarding their health,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor pledged the university’s full support and urged PCRC to sustain its anti-drug campaign as a continuous effort to curb illicit drug use on campus.
The visit ended with PCRC presenting a partnership certificate to the university in recognition of their joint efforts against drug abuse, cultism and other vices.
