In a press release issued on Friday by the the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, FG has directed University of Lagos Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council, Wale Babalakin, and the embattled Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to recuse themselves from official duties until the newly set up Special Visitation Panel has completed its inquiry in the on ongoing crises rocking the university.
According to the Presss Release, President Buhari has also authorised the university Senate to replace the current Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Theophilus Soyombo, with a new Acting VC from among its members. The new Acting VC shall oversee the affairs of the Governing Council at the moment.
The seven-man visitation panel include Prof. Tukur Sa’ad, (Chairman), Barr Grace Ekanem (Secretary), Barr. Victor Onuoha, Prof. Ikenna Oyindo, Prof. Ekanem Braide, Prof. Adamu K. Usman, and Chief Jimoh Bankole (members).
University of Lagos has been engulfed by administrative crises following a disagreement between the Chairman of the Governing Council/Pro-Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor, which has led to the purported removal of the Vice Chancellor last week at a meeting of the Governing Council at the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja, chaired by Wale Babalakin, and attended by 12 council members, the VC included. Majority of the Council members voted for Prof. Ogundipe’s removal and appointed Prof. Theophilus Soyombo as acting Vice Chancellor of the university.
