The management of the University of Jos has suspended lectures and summoned students to an emergency meeting over rising security concerns and recent incidents within and around the institution.

The management said academic activities would remain suspended during the period to ensure full participation in the meeting.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns within the university community.

Press reports that the meeting comes barely two weeks after the beheaded body of a farmer was discovered on a farmland within the institution’s permanent site.

A week after the killing of the farmer, a mob allegedly beat a student, Ibrahim Mbaya, to death at an off-campus apartment over alleged phone theft.

In an internal memorandum signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, on Wednesday, the management said the meeting is scheduled to hold on Friday as part of efforts to maintain law and order within and outside the institution.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the meeting became necessary in view of recent developments.

“In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos,” the memorandum stated.

Professor Ishaya said the meeting would focus on general security concerns within the university community, recent unhealthy activities involving students, and measures to safeguard the well-being of all members of the institution.

“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community,” Professor Tanko said.
