A lecturer at Foreign Links College of Health Sciences, Moro, Osun State, Dr Nsikak Akpan, on Sunday, set a new world record for the longest marathon lecture.
News media had earlier reported that Akpan, while speaking with journalists ahead of the event, held on the campus of the college, disclosed that his application with the reference number: 240427100506lml sent to the Guinness World Records for him to embark on the 150-hour longest marathon lecture, had been approved.
He broke the previous record at about 4:30 am on Sunday when he reached 142 hours of marathon lecture to set aside Prof. Arvin Mishra of India’s longest marathon lecture record of 139 hours 52 minutes 42 seconds, which was set in the year 2014.
He however met his target of 150 hours of lecture around 2:30 pm, igniting jubilation by his audience compromising largely of his students and journalists.
Responding to questions from journalists, the visibly tired Akpan, who had medical emergency on Friday, and had to be treated before he could continue with the challenge said, “It took us two to three months to plan this.
“When the incident (sickness) happened, I didn’t consider or think about quitting. I was prepared for it and I kept on without thinking about the situation. I was treated and when I was certified strong enough to continue, I returned.
Asked about the challenges he had to contend with in the course of achieving the set target, the lecturer said “Some people thought we would not achieve this because of money. But we have achieved it without them.
“Challenges will always come but for anyone that wants to succeed, you must not look at them. Continue without looking at them and you will succeed. I don’t feel tired, I feel like I want to continue.”
