The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has unveiled the official logo and mascot for the 2026 West Africa Universities Games (WAUG), scheduled to hold from October 2 to 12, 2026.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Ile-Ife, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Simeon Bamire, said OAU is fully prepared to host student-athletes from across West Africa for what he described as a celebration of sports, friendship, scholarship and cultural integration.
Bamire said hosting the Games is more than an institutional responsibility, describing it as a service to Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
He noted that OAU’s reputation for academic excellence, character development, innovation, sporting achievements and efficient administration places it in a strong position to successfully host the competition.
According to him, the West Africa Universities Games have continued to serve as a platform for promoting unity among universities in the sub-region by fostering healthy competition, mutual respect and cultural exchange.
The Vice-Chancellor said the newly unveiled mascot symbolises energy, courage, friendliness and hospitality, reflecting both the university’s values and Nigeria’s welcoming spirit.
He added that various committees have intensified preparations to ensure that every aspect of the Games meets international standards.
According to him, sporting facilities are being upgraded where necessary, while accommodation, transportation, healthcare, security and volunteer training are receiving adequate attention.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations. Various committees have been working tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of the Games meets international standards.
“Our sporting facilities are being upgraded where necessary, accommodation arrangements are receiving adequate attention, transportation logistics are being strengthened, healthcare and security measures are being enhanced, while volunteers are being trained to provide exceptional services throughout the competition.
