The Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM) known as “Africa’s MIT” welcomed the pioneering students of its undergraduate programmes during the institution’s inaugural matriculation ceremony on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Okey Enelemah, a former Nigerian minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, the chairman of the NUTM Board of Trustees, in his address to the matriculating students, emphasised the university’s commitment to nurturing the world’s next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers.

“This ceremony is a testament to our vision of fostering transformative education in Africa. These students represent the future of the continent, and we’re proud to provide them with the tools and environment to thrive,” he said.

Bola Adesola, chairman of Ecobank Nigeria and a member of the NUTM board in her remarks encouraged the students to not only focus on their academics but also embrace life’s broader experiences and explore the diverse opportunities the institution offers.

According to Adesola, these experiences will prepare the students to face future challenges. “As the first group of students to matriculate, you are playing a pivotal role in embodying NUTM’s mission to develop innovative leaders in technology and management who will create an impact in Africa and the world.”

Babs Omotowa, president of NUTM urged the students to pursue excellence and maximise the university’s opportunities.

“We aim to create an environment that goes beyond knowledge to nurture moral courage, critical thinking, and the capacity to create opportunities,” he said.

Omotowa also highlighted NUTM’s affiliations with top international institutions and private-sector organisations, designed to enhance students’ employability and global competitiveness.

Besides, he counselled the matriculating students to seize the limitless opportunities at NUTM and steer clear of vices that could hinder their success.

The enthusiastic matriculating students pledged their commitment to the university’s core values, officially becoming bona fide students of the institution.

The event marked a significant milestone in the university’s academic journey as a leading institution dedicated to redefining Africa’s future through world-class education.

The ceremony, held at its temporary campus in Apapa, Lagos, served as the official welcome for the university’s first cohort of undergraduate students. Parents, dignitaries, and stakeholders in the education sector gathered to witness this momentous occasion.

The undergraduate programmes offer a cutting-edge curriculum, designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to excel in a competitive global landscape for students interested in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology.

NUTM is an innovative higher education institution dedicated to training the next generation of transformative leaders in technology, science, engineering, and management for Africa.

Founded by visionary Nigerian business leaders through the Aspen Leadership Institute, NUTM was established to address the critical challenges and capitalize on the vast opportunities across Africa in the coming decade.
