The National Universities Commission has approved the establishment of 18 new full-time academic programmes at the University of Jos.
The institution’s Senior Deputy Registrar, Abdullahi Abdullahi, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday, noting that the programmes will commence in the 2025/2026 academic session.
He described the approval as a significant expansion of the university’s academic offerings, aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and addressing the evolving needs of students and the wider community.
Abdullahi said the approval followed a comprehensive Resource Verification visit conducted by the NUC, during which it assessed the human and material resources available at the university for the successful establishment of the programmes.
According to him, the evaluation ensured that the University of Jos is well-equipped to provide quality education in the new fields.
“The new academic programmes encompass a diverse range of disciplines, including B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Cyber Security, B.Sc. Software Engineering, B.Sc. Information Systems, and B.Sc. Information Technology.
“The Commission further granted approval for the establishment of programmes in B.RAD. Radiography, D.P.T. Physiotherapy, B.Sc. Entrepreneurship, B.Sc. Public Administration, B.Sc. Forensic Science, B.Sc. Pharmacology, and B.Sc. Social Work.
“The Commission stipulated that these programmes are currently approved for full-time undergraduate delivery only, with the potential for future expansion into postgraduate offerings requiring further notification to the NUC for proper record-keeping.
“This approval represents a milestone in the University’s commitment to excellence and preparing students to meet the challenges of contemporary times with much-needed skills and knowledge,” Abdullahi concluded.
