Northwest University Fee Hike Sparks Outrage Amongst Students

Northwest University, Kano, has announced a hike in school fees for returning undergraduate students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The increase was confirmed in a circular issued by the university’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Directorate on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

The revised charges affect central registration, administrative fees, and hostel maintenance, among other student-related payments.

Under the new fee structure, returning students in certain faculties, notably Accounting are expected to pay over ₦50,000 in total fees, making it one of the highest charges across departments.

The increment comes just weeks after the Kano State Government announced a 50% reduction in registration fees for indigenes studying in state-owned tertiary institutions.

The policy, introduced by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofar-Mata, was designed to cushion the effects of the recent fuel subsidy removal and the rising cost of living.

The apparent contradiction between the state government’s fee reduction policy and the university’s new fee schedule has raised questions about coordination between state education authorities and tertiary institutions.

Reacting to the development, several students have taken to social media and campus forums to express their displeasure, calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to wade into the matter.
