NLNG Science Contest for Secondary School Students 2026

 

The NLNG Science Exhibition Fair Competition is an annual platform created to promote creativity, innovation, and practical scientific problem solving among Nigerian secondary school students. It provides qualifying schools with the opportunity to showcase innovative science projects that demonstrate originality, real world relevance, and scientific excellence.

This competition is open to Senior Secondary School students from schools that have advanced to the Championship Stage of the NLNG Science Quiz Competition. It extends the contest beyond theoretical knowledge, enabling students to apply science in meaningful and impactful ways.

 

How the Exhibition Fair Works

The Science Exhibition Fair begins at the Championship Stage of the NLNG Science Quiz Competition.

Qualifying schools are invited to present their innovative science projects to a panel of judges and stakeholders.

Projects are evaluated based on: Creativity, Scientific relevance, Originality, Practicality, and Overall impact.

The top-performing school at the Championship Stage will advance to compete for the final exhibition title during the Grand Finale.

 

NLNG Science Contest Benefits

Up to 15 million naira worth of prizes and gift items for students, teachers, and schools.

 

Requirements for NLNG Science Contest

Senior Secondary School students different from the quiz participants.

Schools that qualify for and advance to the Championship Stage of the NLNG Science Quiz.

Students presenting approved science projects on behalf of their schools.

 

School Eligibility

Must be a government-owned public school in Rivers State

Principal's Endorsement Letter: Schools must upload a signed endorsement letter from the school principal on the school's official letterhead. The letter must include declaration of principal's awareness and approval, names of accompanying staff and students, and the school's official contact information.

Gender Parity: Mixed gender schools must not present only one gender across all categories. Participation should reflect a fair gender balance to promote inclusiveness and equal opportunity.

Each school nominates 2 students from SSS 1 and 2 students from SSS 2

 

Selection Process

Competition Stages

Olympiad Stage

The Olympiad Stage is the first stage of the competition and the features are as follows:

This will be deployed using a computer-based test application. CBT centre to use will be located in Rivers State

Public schools are to nominate student's representatives from their schools based on academic performance

Each school will nominate 2 representatives from each class from SSS 1 to SSS 2 for the Olympiad stage

Championship Stage

This is the second stage of the Science Quiz Competition. The qualifiers from the Olympiad Stage will compete in the Championship Stage. The features of the championship stage are as follow:

The performance of the schools is rated by classes. That is, the competition will produce a school ranking for each of the competing classes.

The performance of each school for the different class sections (SSS 1 & SSS 2) will be based on the cumulative average of the 2 students representing the school per class.

Class SSS 1 will not progress further from this stage as the winners for SSS 1 will be determined at the Championship Stage. Awards will be presented at the Grand Finale.

Grand Finale

The Grand Finale will follow a traditional quiz competition style in which participating schools will be invited to a location. 

The event will feature the following:

Top 7 performing schools from the Championship Stage will progress to this stage

Each school (via their representatives) will engage in round robin question and answer session with each correct answer earning that school points

There will be a total of 6 rounds for this stage. 5 of the rounds will be based on each subject (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science). Each round will test the participant on each subject specifically

The 6th round will be a wild card round, this will be questions based on Science and Innovative Solutions.
