The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has expressed shock over the killing of a 300-level Computer Science student, Mr Godwin Akpakpan, in an off-campus shooting incident.
According to a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Sammy Kpenu, the incident, allegedly involving security personnel, occurred outside the university premises. The management conveyed its deep sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to occupy the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State if justice is not served.
NANS alleged that Akpakpan was arrested by men in police uniform during a stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt on April 16, 2024, and was later shot during an altercation between police officers and individuals in military uniform.
Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, chairman of NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, expressed outrage, stating, “None of the security agencies involved is claiming responsibility for the bullet that allegedly killed Akpakpan. We demand an immediate investigation into this alleged murder and call on the relevant authorities to bring those involved to book. If nothing is done, we will not hesitate to occupy the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State.”
Chinonso stressed the students’ determination to ensure justice, adding, “We will not allow the lives of our members to be taken without consequences. We demand justice for Godwin Francis Akpakpan and his family.”
In its response, the university disclosed that it is collaborating with relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. “We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.
The university management appealed to students and the academic community to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed. It assured that the institution remains committed to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students and staff.
