The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has collaborated with the Rotary Club of Gbagada South to promote literacy among public secondary school students across the state.
A Wednesday statement noted that the event was also done in partnership with 11 other Rotary clubs in District 9112 in Lagos.
Speaking at the grand finale of the Rotary Annual Inter-Secondary Schools Quiz Competition 2026, the Deputy Director of Education and Desk Officer for Quiz, Debate and Competitions at the state ministry, Ronke Matuluko, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting quality education.
Matuluko lauded the potential of the competition in promoting literacy among young minds.
She listed the participating schools to include Gaskiya Senior College, Gbaja Girls Senior High School, Ijeshatedo Senior Grammar School, Okota District Senior College, Oriwu Senior Model College, and Eko Akete Senior Grammar School.
The Rotary Club’s District Governor, Lanre Adedoyin, said every member had a duty to lead and guide young people rightly.
“Our young ones should be educated and encouraged to take it as an article of faith because they are the leaders of tomorrow,” Adedoyin said.
Also speaking, the President of the Rotary Club of Gbagada South, Adeniyi Adegbite, said the competition provided a platform for nurturing curiosity, discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills among students.
He explained that the initiative, which aligns with Rotary International’s focus on basic education and literacy, is aimed at enhancing learning outcomes for students in public schools.
At the end of the debate, Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, emerged first, while Ijeshatedo Senior Grammar School, Surulere, and District Senior College, Meiran took second and third positions respectively.
