Residents of Abaranje, a fast-growing area in Alimosho Constituency II, Lagos, on Saturday witnessed the inauguration of their first public secondary school.
The commissioning of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Secondary School ends years without a public secondary institution in the community, giving children access to formal education closer to home.
The project has been described as a significant legislative milestone for the lawmaker representing the constituency, Mr Kehinde Joseph.
In his welcome address, Joseph said the idea for the school was inspired by a charge he received in 2015 from Oluremi Tinubu.
“In 2015, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, charged us to always put the people first and work tirelessly for their benefit,” he said, adding that the message shaped his approach to public service.
He dedicated the facility to students and urged them to safeguard it as a shared asset.
Representing Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, reiterated the administration’s commitment to the Eko Excel programme, which focuses on improving teaching through structured training.
He said the one-storey school building was delivered to a high standard to support effective learning.
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, commended Joseph for completing the project, noting that effective representation requires responsiveness to constituents’ needs.
“It is not just about the building, but about the capacity, ability and dedication he shows on the floor of the House,” Obasa said.
He also urged residents of Alimosho to support the lawmaker in future elections, describing him as a strong member of the Assembly.
In a keynote address, Tinubu, represented by Alawiye King, praised the collaboration between the state government and the lawmaker. She said the school, designed to accommodate more than 700 students, would promote learning and contribute to social development.
“This project will not only provide education but will also help depopulate gangs and violent groups, while giving our children the opportunity to attain their fullest potentials,” she said.
