Kenyan Government Announces Free University Education for Students

Kenyan President William Ruto announces free university education beginning September 2026, promising expanded access for students entering public institutions nationwide this year. The landmark policy guarantees government-funded tuition for eligible students attending public universities, colleges, and Technical Vocational Education and Training institutions nationwide.

President Ruto unveiled the education reform during a national address, describing affordable higher education as essential for Kenya’s economic transformation and future. The proposal replaces Kenya’s previous needs-based funding model with universal tuition sponsorship, while allowing parents to make voluntary financial contributions if desired.

Parliament must approve amendments to higher education funding laws before authorities fully implement the nationwide education programme for incoming September students. Kenyan President William Ruto announces free university education following months of public debate over affordability, student loans, and equal educational opportunities nationwide.

Government officials believe universal sponsorship will increase enrollment, reduce financial barriers, and strengthen workforce development through improved access to quality higher education. The initiative also covers Technical Vocational Education and Training institutions, encouraging practical skills development alongside traditional university academic programmes across Kenya.

Education analysts welcomed the proposal, although some experts questioned long-term funding sustainability and implementation costs for expanding government-sponsored higher education nationwide. The announcement marks one of President Ruto’s most ambitious education reforms, aiming to improve opportunities and strengthen Kenya’s future economic competitiveness through learning.
