Schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commended the ongoing education reforms initiated by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as the Education Resource Centre (ERC) intensified monitoring of the ongoing Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) Mock Examinations in Mathematics.
The commendation followed inspection visits to several schools by the Director of the Education Resource Centre, Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, alongside the Director of the Department of Quality Assurance, Hajia Titilayo Hajara Alayande, as part of efforts to ensure strict adherence to examination standards and enforce zero tolerance for malpractice.
During the monitoring exercise, the Director of Royal Family Academy, Wuye, Ms. Olubunmi Ayeni, described the ERC Mock Examination as a highly impactful initiative that has consistently helped schools evaluate students’ preparedness for external examinations.
“The Mock Examination has been very helpful to us since inception. That is why we participate year after year. The questions are of WAEC standard, and ERC is doing a very good job,” she said.
Ayeni explained that the school carefully analyses the results of the mock examination to identify students’ strengths and areas requiring improvement, enabling teachers to align instruction with national examination standards. She added that as a law-abiding institution, the school remains fully compliant with government policies and directives.
She also urged private schools yet to participate in the ERC programme to join the initiative in order to collectively raise examination standards across the FCT.
Speaking earlier, the Director of ERC, Dr. Abdulrahim, stated that the monitoring exercise forms part of the centre’s mandate to ensure examinations are conducted in conducive environments with properly vetted question papers that meet approved standards.
According to her, the growing number of private schools participating in the mock examination reflects the credibility and standard of the ERC initiative. She also commended the orderly conduct observed in the schools visited.
Dr. Abdulrahim noted that the ongoing renovation of public school facilities by the FCT Administration has significantly boosted students’ morale, adding that improved infrastructure has created more conducive environments for learning and examinations.
In her remarks, the Director of Quality Assurance, Hajia Alayande, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting the integrity of examinations across the territory.
She commended the ERC for sustaining a high-quality mock examination process that adequately prepares students for national examinations such as West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO).
Alayande expressed satisfaction with the upgraded facilities in the schools visited, praising teachers for their dedication and noting that students demonstrated confidence and seriousness during the exercise.
Principals of the schools visited also described the ERC Mock Examination as a reliable benchmark for assessing students’ readiness for external examinations. They highlighted the timely distribution of question papers, smooth conduct of the examinations and improved learning environments.
The principals further appreciated the FCT Minister for the ongoing renovation of school facilities and assured the FCT Administration of their commitment to maintaining the upgraded infrastructure.
Students who participated in the mock examination expressed confidence in their preparedness, attributing their readiness to extra lessons organised by their teachers as well as personal study efforts. They also pledged to shun examination malpractice and remain focused on academic excellence.
Schools visited during the monitoring exercise included Government Science Technical College, Area 3; Government Secondary School, Garki; Government Science Secondary School, Maitama; and Royal Family Academy, Wuye, among others.
The ongoing monitoring exercise, officials said, underscores the FCT Administration’s commitment to strengthening academic standards and ensuring students are adequately prepared to excel in external examinations.
