EU-UNESCO Launches Education Development Project in Nigeria

The European Union in collaboration with UNESCO, as part of its commitment to helping Nigeria develop its education sector, has now launched a second Phase of its project aimed at building the capacity and Resilience of teachers

The project also seeks to address the loss of skilled teachers to a more lucrative profession.

This is the launch of the 2nd phase of the education Programme funded by the EU and implemented by UNESCO tagged ‘Expand, integrate and strengthen Systems (EISS).

It aims to build teachers’ capacity thereby focusing on teachers’ education – a continuation of the 1st phase ‘Education and Youth Empowerment in Northwestern Nigeria’.

The 1st phase of the project is targeted at providing quality education and skills development with a focus on out-of-school children and girls in rural and underserved communities.

The need for the 2nd phase stems from a 2023 UNESCO Global report on teachers which says there is a critical shortage of teachers, hindering the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 and the Education 2030 agenda. Both projects are estimated to cost about 45.4million Euros.

The 2nd phase of the project has 6 focal states, Bayelsa, Enugu, Katsina, Adamawa, Plateau and Oyo States.
