In strong words, the executive governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has warned parents and clerics in Kaduna that whoever enrolls a child into Almajiri system will be prosecuted and jailed, as well as fined N100,000 or N200,000 per child.
He gave this warning on Monday at Government College, Kurmin Mashi, Kaduna while inspecting Almajiri children undergoing rehabilitation and optical screening after being repatriated from Nasarawa state.
He expressed the willingness of his administration to take care of the children and will not relent from their duty to ‘‘take delivery of every Almajiri pupil indigenous to Kaduna state for rehabilitation, treatment and enrollment into formal school nearest to where their parents live.”
He considers the Almajiri system a menace and an abuse of the privileges and future of a child. He also assured the people that the children will be given good formal education without depriving them of the opportunity to acquire Quranic education.
The Kaduna state government, through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development (MHSSD), in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), AMA foundation, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil societies, is offering 12-year free and compulsory primary and secondary school education to children in the state. And in any case the child fails to proceed to senior secondary school, he/she will have the opportunity to go to free vocational school.
