Ebonyi State To Reopen Schools On October 5, Sets Up A School Monitoring Team

According to the release, classes will be staggered in two sessions (morning 8am - 12pm and afternoon 12:15 – 4.15pm). This is in accordance with the federal government approved school reopening guidelines to maintain social distancing and avoid escalation of coronavirus among returning students.

In a press release by Ebonyi State government after its Executive Council meeting on Thursday, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Onyebuchi Chima, through a memo revealed that all schools - primary, secondary and tertiary - will resume studies on Monday, October 5, 2020.  

According to the release, classes will be staggered in two sessions (morning 8am - 12pm and afternoon 12:15 – 4.15pm). This is in accordance with the federal government approved school reopening guidelines to maintain social distancing and avoid escalation of coronavirus among returning students.

Based on the state’s new academic calendar, 2020 academic session will end in the first four weeks after the school resumes on October 5. Thereafter, the 2021 academic session would commence.

The state however made it clear that children in nursery and kindergarten will not join the rest to resume on October 5 considering that it would be difficult to control them in terms of curbing the spread of coronavirus.

To enforce compliance with the directives on school resumption, the State Executive Council set up a school monitoring team and assigned them portfolios as follows, Hon. Sunday Ogodo, Special Assistant on Schools Monitoring in Ezza South; Hon Ogbonnaya Chukwude, Ivo; Hon. Ogbonnaya Oko Enyim, Afikpo North; Hon. Okechukwu Nwakpu, Ikwo; Hon Emmanuel Obasi, Development Centres in Ohaozara Council Area; while all the newly assigned SAs are to monitor all schools in their respective Local Government Areas.
