The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has announced the death of a medical student, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, who reportedly died during a clinical examination.

Boldscholar News understands that the incident, which has thrown the university community into mourning, occurred during a clinical viva at the institution’s College of Health Sciences.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the university described the incident as sudden, revealing that the Part IV student had complained of chest pain before collapsing during the examination.

The institution’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, said Adewole was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students present at the venue.

Olarewaju disclosed that despite prompt medical intervention, efforts to revive the student proved unsuccessful.

“Despite all efforts made to resuscitate him, he sadly passed on. This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the university community,” he said.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students, commiserated with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

The management described the incident as heartbreaking and extended its support to those affected by the loss.

The university further stated that it is engaging relevant authorities and the family of the deceased to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It added that necessary support is being provided as efforts continue to unravel the cause of the sudden death.

The tragic incident has left students and staff in shock, with many describing the loss as devastating, particularly given the deceased’s stage in his academic journey.
