The Commonwealth Foundation has postponed the opening of the 2027 Commonwealth Short Story Prize until January, following a monthlong review triggered by allegations that artificial intelligence was used to write this year’s winning entries.
The Foundation said in a statement that it had upheld the original decision of the 2026 judging panel after completing its review, but added the episode had exposed the need to strengthen safeguards against AI misuse in future competitions.
The prize, a flagship cultural initiative of the Commonwealth Foundation, will not open for 2027 entries as previously scheduled this autumn. Organisers said the delay would allow time for a comprehensive review of the competition’s processes, entry rules and submission guidelines, with the aim of better preparing staff, entrants, readers and judges to detect and address AI-generated work.
The Foundation said it remained committed to supporting emerging writers and amplifying underrepresented voices across the Commonwealth, adding that fair and robust processes were essential to sustaining trust in the prize. It thanked writers who had planned to enter this autumn for their patience, and said it looked forward to receiving submissions when the prize reopens in January 2027.
The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is run by the Commonwealth Foundation, based at Marlborough House in London, as part of its wider mission to promote creative expression across Commonwealth nations.
