Benue State government has assembled stakeholders to discuss the reopening of schools in the state. The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, who convened the meeting, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the modalities for school reopening and to get input from the stakeholders.
In addition to decontaminating the school premises, the stakeholders recommended the provision of “face masks, thermometers and hand washing facilities at the school gates, hostels, classes and offices.”
Similarly, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, has confirmed the state government’s decision to reopen schools in the state on September 21, 2020.
The commissioner explained that the resumptions will be in phases, beginning with the present JSS 3 and SSS 2 students, who are slated to resume on Monday September 2. This arrangement will enable the officials to observe the students closely and also help the students maintain reasonable social distancing as approved by the health regulatory bodies on COVID-19.
On the decision to choose junior secondary school 3 and senior secondary school 2 for the first phase of resumption, Mrs. Adefisayo explained that it “will permit the present JSS 3 students who are already in an exit class to revise and get adequately prepared for their forthcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination organised by the Lagos State Examination Board and scheduled between Tuesday, 6th and Monday, 12th of October, 2020.”
“The resumption will also afford the present SSS 2 students an opportunity to prepare effectively for their transition to SSS 3.”
The Honourable Commissioner has advised private schools to implement guidelines and phase-by-phase resumption similar to that of public schools.
