The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is gearing up for a nationwide strike that could disrupt academic activities in Nigeria’s universities.

The union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) member, who heads one of ASUU’s branches in the North West, expressed regret that the Bola Tinubu administration is handling the welfare of its members with kid gloves.

“We are still mobilising. We have given the government enough time. The National President will convene a NEC meeting at any moment from now to signal the way forward. But I can confirm that strike is on the table,” the union leader told The Guardian.

Background of the Dispute

The union’s decision to consider a strike comes amid unresolved issues, including the implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, conditions of service, funding, university autonomy, and academic freedom.

ASUU members feel that the government has not fulfilled its promises, leading to a decline in the welfare of university staff.

ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, had previously warned that the union would embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to honor the 2009 agreement.

The union is also demanding the release of withheld salaries, improved funding for universities, and better working conditions for its members.
