The Akada Children’s Book Festival is a showcase of literary work created for a diverse audience of children. The festival encourages the culture of reading for pleasure from an early age and improves access to age-appropriate books. It provides a platform for literary professionals such as writers, illustrators, editors and publishers of children's books to showcase their work.
The festival also helps book lovers, child development enthusiasts and literary creatives to connect with like minds. The ACBF hosts essential workshops and engaging activities in which families can participate together, in addition to providing an avenue through which parents, children and teachers can discover new books. The event has support and active participation from students and teachers of schools across the state.
It is the first and the largest Nigerian book festival specifically for young readers. The maiden edition was held in 2019. The second and third editions of the festival (2020 and 2021) were held online during the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting participants from across Nigeria and from over 23 countries around the world. This is a testament to the interest that people have in culturally-inclusive children’s books. In 2022 & 2023 we were able to hold the ACBF as a physical event.
The ACBF was named the 2023 Brittle Paper Literary Platform of the Year.
The 2024 edition of the Akada Children’s Book Festival will be an in-person event that will be held at the vibrant UpBeat Centre on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. It will feature author-led book readings; book chats; professional workshops for children's book writers; illustrators & publishers; fun mini-workshops for children; music; drama and insightful sessions for parents.
It will be a fun-filled day of literature, learning, and excitement!
