The world has been terribly shaken by COVID19 pandemic. Every sector of human activities is in serious comatose. Of all the sectors, the education sector particularly has been hard hit by the effect of the scourge. But for few academic institutions that have recently decided to engage e-learning technologies, such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, Udemy, Teachable, etc, academic activities would have been completely shut down globally. Based on UNESCO report on May 11, 2020, on COVID-19 Educational Disruption and Response, a total of 1,235,602,579 learners are affected globally. This number is about 70.6% of total enrolled learners globally and over 72% of the world’s student population. According to its report, this has resulted in 168 country-wide closures. Of course Africa has a huge share of these closures with 40 countries completely shutting down schools.

In this report, we shall reveal the number of learners affected in 40 African countries, based on the data we collected from UNESCO. Figures below correspond to number of learners enrolled at pre-primary, primary, lower-secondary, and upper-secondary levels of education, in accordance with International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) levels 0 to 3, as well as at tertiary education levels (ISCED levels 5 to 8). Data is arranged alphabetically.
