The leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University (ABSU) chapter, Uturu has declared total and indefinite suspension of academic activities in the university.
It was gathered that ASUU’s decision was based on the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.
It announced the strike through a statement made available to reporters in Umuahia.
The Chairman, Dr Chidi Mba, and Secretary, Dr. Victor Obisike, said the decision followed the failure of the Governor Alex Otti administration and the university management to implement the agreement signed by ASUU and Federal Government on December 23, 2025, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.
ASUU said despite engagements with Abia State Government and the university administration, presentation of the agreement and issuance of a 21-day ultimatum, there had been no meaningful response.
The statement signed by Dr. Mba and Dr. Obisike said: “Dear comrades, the ASUU–ABSU branch hereby informs all members that the branch has commenced a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike with effect from today, August 11, 2026.
“Accordingly, all members are directed to withdraw their services completely and comply fully with the directives of the union.
“Members are enjoined to remain united, resolute and committed as we collectively pursue the resolution of the outstanding welfare and institutional demands of the union.
“Remember no attendance to any form of statutory meetings of any sort including senate meetings, faculty boards, etc.
“Further directives and updates will be communicated to members as developments unfold.”
