The grand finale marked the conclusion of a rigorous three-stage contest comprising the Championship Round, Science Project Exhibition, and the Final Quiz Battle. In the Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) category, Community Secondary School, Igboh-Etche emerged victorious by demonstrating a commanding grasp of core scientific principles especially those tied to renewable energy and a confident, precise approach to problem-solving.
Continuing the tradition of integrating technology into the learning experience, this year’s quiz featured a mobile application system enabling participants to respond in real time, with questions projected on a large LED screen. At the conclusion of the event, a vibrant award ceremony saw top-performing students, schools, and teachers rewarded with prizes worth up to ₦10 million. Special recognition was also given to the top three schools in the overall competition; and the best innovation in the science exhibition award was also awarded.
In the Science Project Exhibition category, which was introduced last year to encourage hands-on engagement in STEM disciplines, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School took first place. They were closely followed by Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, who finished second and third respectively, all impressing judges with their practical, solution-oriented projects.

Horsfall said as the world shifts toward cleaner and greener energy solutions, NLNG is proud to invest not only in energy infrastructure but also in the young minds who will lead that transition. “This competition goes beyond academics it’s about building the capacity of tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and policymakers,” she remarked.
She noted that since its inception, the competition has reached over 200 public secondary schools and continues to play a critical role in encouraging students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Representing the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Tam Job Inisefiekabo, speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, commended the initiative and described the theme as timely and future-oriented. He emphasised the importance of equipping students with the knowledge and skills to tackle global challenges like climate change and energy security through quality education.
Also present was Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State Chapter, who echoed calls for sustained investment in science education. He stressed the need to equip students with creativity and innovation skills to drive sustainable development in Nigeria.
Originally launched in 2008 and reintroduced in 2020 after a brief hiatus, the NLNG Science Quiz Competition has evolved into a flagship platform for science education in Rivers State. The inclusion of the Science Project Exhibition has further enriched the initiative, offering students a hands-on opportunity to transform classroom theories into practical, real-world applications.
Organised in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), and facilitated by Dragnet Solutions Ltd, the competition has remained focused on maintaining transparency and quality throughout the process. The program continues to inspire creativity, promote real-world problem solving, and support Nigeria’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.
As the global community leans further into clean energy innovation, initiatives like the NLNG Science Quiz Competition and Science Project Exhibition remain crucial in equipping young Nigerians with the skills, confidence and knowledge to lead that transformation.
